Our spaces: Highland Print Studio
Highland Print Studio (HPS) is an open-access production facility in the heart of Inverness. The organisation was established in 1985 and is a registered charity and limited company. HPS specialises in printmaking; housing centuries old artistic techniques, such as etching, woodcut and lithography, alongside digital imaging and photographic facilities.
HPS encompasses a dynamic creative environment where beginners can use the same high-grade facility and interact with professional Scottish and international artists, all with the shared purpose of artistic development and production. The Studio attracts regular users from across the north of Scotland and is a destination for national and international visitors, who come for tuition, to combine using the studio with a holiday in the Highlands, or to view and buy artwork.
“A very helpful and friendly environment. As a complete amateur it was a pleasure to learn and work alongside greatly talented people.”
HPS supports the visual arts sector by providing employment, commissions, residencies and continuing professional development for professional artists. It campaigns to promote the value that culture brings to the individual, society and the economy and works to engage new audiences and improve access to participation.
“Fantastic space and expertise. Such a valuable place to have in the Highlands.”
Learning is an important element of the organisation’s activity, working with schools and community groups both locally and across the Highlands and Islands. Creative activities range from taster sessions to project taking place over days, weeks, months and occasionally years, with work taking place both at the Studio and in the community. HPS has an impressive track record in community engagement, including ground-breaking projects for older men, disabled people and intergenerational work.
A key feature of Highland Print Studio’s educational programme is its annual access classes, which enable participants to learn to use the workshop self-sufficiently, under the supervision and support of HPS staff.
“I really enjoyed the course – it was an excellent mix of technical and practical. I’ve learnt so many things today, I can’t wait to put it all into practice! Thank you – I will recommend to others!”
